Today I arrived at the very end of demonstration about food waste in front of the Reichstag. The food sharing activist group in Germany set up a large banquet table to present the politicians a small portion of the good and usable food which is wasted by grocery stores any given day. All of the food on the table was something that was donated and would have been disposed in exchange for something fresher at the supermarket. Afterwards people passing by and at the demonstration were invited to take any of it home – and my fridge is stocked with vegetables that will last me all week! One thing that I have been trying to do as I travel is be conscious of how much food I buy and I try to never waste anything. I know that in the United States my family can often have too much stocked in our refrigerator and we don’t touch it until we realize it went bad. There are small things we can do to be respectful of what we harvest on this earth and people in other parts of the world that do not have enough food to eat each day- or the luxury to choose what they eat.
But of course that does not mean that you can’t enjoy a nice craft beer or apple strudel once in a while!
