20 km hike and 3 hours by train- this view was worth it. This tower below is called “The Brocken” and is the highest peak in Northern Germany. The wall diving the east and west went right through these mountains and during the DDR the Brocken was used by the Stasi as a radio and watch tower. The area was off limits to travelers until the border reopened in 1989. I hiked with the Berlin Uni Wanderclub, which was founded by some Servas friends- Simon and Britta- after wishing there was a way for students to get out of the hectic city for the day and “wander.”
And Happy Halloween! The Dia de los Muertos makeup is very thematically appropriate for my project.
