Pottery Class

I joined a pottery class! We are using Egyptian clay from Aswan and eventually we will also try on to the traditional Egyptian pottery wheel. When my teacher asked me what I was doing here in Egypt, I told him I was studying the cemeteries. He was confused until one of my fellow students translated into Arabic. Then his expression totally changed and he burst out laughing. Soon the entire class was laughing including myself. It was ridiculous. Why on earth would this girl from the US come to Egypt to visit the cemeteries and then off all things decide to take his class? Well, this actually led to an interesting discussion because Egyptians are not really eager to talk about cemeteries in the first place. It is more of a taboo subject than any other country I have visited so far. Maybe I will sculpt some grave stones out of clay while I am here and get the entire country laughing.
