In Sweden it is fika (coffee), in Germany it is apfelshorle (sparkling apple juice), in Egypt it is shay and sheesha (tea and hooka), and now in Argentina it is Mate.
Mate is a tea drink that is made by steeping dried yerba mate leaves in hot water. People sip from a metal straw and share one cup made from a old dried out gord which has been often wrapped in leather. It tastes very earthy, has a lot of caffein, and is an alternative to coffee. Actually, in Berlin “Club Mate” is very popular, which is a cold sparkling version of Mate tea, which you can buy by the bottle in almost every späti. Only the cool kids drink that one.
Yeah, mate!! Though I never rally cottoned to it like I did to tango. So… when are you going out to see/do that? 🙂 ❤
