Because this cemetery is no longer “working” and has transformed into something more like a dog park, it is also the site for one of the works of the Sydney Biennale. It turns out that there are other artists fascinated by cemeteries besides me. Bo Christian Larsson uses this site for his durational performance installation, “Fade away, fade away, fade away…” He has hired local seamstresses to work on site, slowly creating custom made white linen covers for the stones. This process renders the stones as anonymous monolithic shapes, void of any identity suggesting gender, wealth, or status. It also unifies the space into one singular monumental landscape, instead of a space with many varying chapters of history. The progress can be followed on this Instagram account.
