Mitama Festival

The Yasukuni shrine is a shinto shrine in Chiyoda, Tokyo that was founded by Emperor Meiji to honor those who died in service of the empire. (Now there is Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery that is basically a modern version of the same thing just half a mile down the road.) Every summer there is a Mitama festival which is associated with the Obon festival perdiod, a time when people honor their ancestors and dead. Thousands of people flock to the wide streets of the shrine which are lined with lanterns. People dance, leave wishes, and remember their deceased family and friends.
